ROWERS ON THE RIVER LEA

I rowed for the Lea from 1997 to 2000 and never won a race. So we were the worst team but had the greatest enthusiasm. I am always intrigued by the dedication to the sport, the hours of training, cleaning boats and chatting in the Riverside Cafe. I love to capture the energy and emotion with raw vibrant colour, working with Acrylic, charcoal and conte pencils.

On the water

Rowers going backwards and Canoeists going forwards, they seemed able share the same busy water without crashing .
it seemed worthy of cranking up the colours to the max.

Canoeists

I admire the veterans still canoeing in all weathers. Even though they were both practically bent double with age, they were enormously athletic.
